:: ABOUT IASC ::

The Indian Association for the Study of Conservation of Cultural Property (IASC) traces its origins to 1966, when UNESCO’s Regional Seminar on the Development of Museums in India was held in New Delhi. Following this, a National Seminar at the National Museum brought together eminent conservators from across the country. During this gathering, the idea of forming a national body dedicated to conservation took shape, and an Executive Committee was elected from among the participants.

Dr. B. B. Lal and Shri O. P. Agrawal were elected as the first President and first Secretary of the Association, respectively. The first Honorary Life Membership of IASC was conferred upon Dr. H. J. Plenderleith, an internationally renowned conservator and former Director of ICCROM, Rome, who was in India at the time of the seminar.

Since its establishment, the Association has served as a vital platform for annual national conferences held in different parts of India. These gatherings bring together conservation scientists, conservators, restorers, and allied professionals to share their achievements, experiences, challenges, and innovations in the field of cultural heritage conservation.

In 1973, IASC began publishing its annual journal, “Conservation of Cultural Property in India,” which features research papers and presentations from its conferences. The journal has since become a recognized publication in the conservation community, with its 43rd volume published.

Additionally, IASC launched its Newsletter in 1989 as an occasional publication to share updates, activities, and news from the conservation community. The Association has also published books and monographs on important conservation topics, many authored by its esteemed members.

In 2011 the IASC established The Prof. B. B. Lal Young Conservator Award, aims to inspire and encourage young professionals in the field of conservation. Each year, the award recognizes emerging conservators who demonstrate outstanding skill, innovation, and commitment to preserving India’s rich cultural heritage.

In the 2025 General Assembly, IASC instituted the H. J. Plenderleith Memorial Lecture to inspire the next generation of conservators with the spirit of pioneering research, collaboration, and public service exemplified by Dr. H. J. Plenderleith.

Through these initiatives, IASC continues to foster collaboration, knowledge exchange, and professional growth in the field of cultural property conservation across India.
